When to Consider Fiberglass Products:

Corrosive Environments

If your design includes platforms, walkways or stairs in a corrosive environment, then it is likely that fiberglass would be the cost effective choice. Other Direct Metals Grating, manufactured with materials such as CorTen steel, and aluminum also offer varying degrees of corrosion resistance, depending on the substance and the intensity of exposure. The decision to use fiberglass can sometimes involve complex evaluations. However, there are many corrosive applications where metal gratings offer unsatisfactory corrosion resistance. In these situations, fiberglass offers much more corrosion resistance than any metal product.

Electrical/Electronic Areas

In any area involving high voltage which could, in an accident, short to a metal flooring, fiberglass provides an important safety factor. Since fiberglass is non-conductive, it is ideal for use as a guard against personnel contact with exposed conductive elements, such as railroad third rails. It also can serve as fencing around high voltage transformers.

General Applications

Direct Metals Fiberglass grating is attractive, and enhances the eye appeal and safety of any structure. It is also high strength, lightweight, and easy to install.
A few typical applications include:
  • Oil refinery catwalks in chemical process plants.
  • Decking surfaces in salt water operating conditions.
  • Pulp mill trench covers.
  • Aisles in metal refining plant.
  • Food processing plants; floor mats for chloride conditions.
  • Metal plating plant; complete floor.
Indiana Gratings is a distributer of Strongwell DURADEK® and DURAGRID® fiberglass grating.

DURADEK® is a standard pultruded grating product stocked by distributors nationwide. It is available with individual bearing bars in either 1" or 1-1/2" "I" shapes or a 2" "T" shape.

DURADEK® is a flame retardant product utilizing a polyester resin. The bearing bars use both longitudinal (glass roving) and multidirectional (glass mat) reinforcements as well as a synthetic surfacing veil to provide unequaled corrosion resistance.

DURAGRID® custom grid or grating systems are designed to accommodate specific applications that cannot effectively be met by a standard fiberglass grating. DURAGRID® offers the customer options such as selection of open space, bar shape, cross-rod placement, custom fabrication, custom resin or color.

DURAGRID® Heavy Duty fiberglass grating is a pultruded bar type grating that can be designed and used like traditional metal grates. The solid individual bearing bars are designed to take heavy wheel traffic such as fork lifts, tow motors and truck traffic. Heavy duty grating is constructed of the same type composite used in the other DURAGRID® products.

DURAGRID® Phenolic Grating is a dramatic innovation for markets where fire safety is a major concern; offering superior resistance to flame and high temperature with low smoke and toxic fume emissions. The nonflammable nature of phenolics enable phenolic grating to withstand higher temperatures than polyester or vinyl ester for extended periods of time without major structural damage. Combined with low thermal conductivity, this provides fire protection not available with alternate materials. DURAGRID® Phenolic Grating is the first composite grating to receive U.S. Coast Guard approval! It is accepted for use in locations and applications as allowed in the U.S.C.G. Policy File Memorandum 2-98 for fire retardant grating meeting structural fire integrity Level 2(L2).
